As David pointed out, the detail which gets the attention here has been previously used for The Limited logo ( a chain of retail clothing stores from Ohio ). The logo was designed by Paul Rand in 1988, but has not been adopted. You can read more about it in this book.
Although the similarities are very clear, I think both of the logos work well in their own context and the similarities are probably just a coincidence.
